I should have taken a photo (I will when back in Vancouver) but the other day I was at the supermarket and I saw a package of alternative (low case) rice. But the package is what caught my attention.

PLANT BASED RICE

..This whole "plant based" label has gotten out of hand.

@emacsen
Part of me is laughing, but part of me is remembering the ginseng green tea drink that I bought in Miami airport that was 30% corn syrup, and that part is glad of any clarification of North American food labels :)

veganism

@emacsen That sounds like it isn't actually rice. Maybe it's made out of corn starch.

@jautero

I know what it's made of. I've eaten it before. The point is the phrase "plant based".

In North America, Plant Based is used when talking about meat or milk alternatives. I wouldn't talk about a "plant based" chocolate or a "plant based" salad alternative.

veganism

@emacsen now I am trying to imagine what a *non* plant-based rice would look like...

@mindspillage

IKR?

For folks who think I don't know what this is- I do- it's just that "Plant Based" is not a label one puts on things that were already plants.

Plant Based Bacon- sure
Plant Based Spinach - umm what?
