What are technologies / embellishmetns which seem like they'd be cool or appeared popular at the time, but just died?

3DTV and talking appliances/cars come to mind.

I'm aiming for features which seem to go one step too far.

@dredmorbius Also, in the area of computing:

Lisp Machines
BeOS/BeBox
The Mindset Computer
GNOME Tracker
Btrfs
ReiserFS

@emacsen @dredmorbius ReiserFS didn't "just die". Its lead developer - Hans Reiser - got nailed for first-degree murder, and the rest of the developers decided they weren't getting paid enough to deal with the "MurderFS" jokes.

@starbreaker @dredmorbius None of these technologies just died.

3DTV stopped being made because no one cared. I had a 3D capable TV and never used that functionality even once.

Google Wave was killed as a project.

Yes, Reiser is a terrible person, but the entire branch of research seemed to have dissapeared too, which is a real shame.

@emacsen Social unacceptability is its own force in technological development or abandonment.

There are any number of concepts which have died for similar (if less violent) reasons.

Look to the cold war and opposition _on both sides_ to ideas of the other. Rejection of Darwinism for Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, and rejection of general socialist (not Leninist/Stalinist/Maoist) principles in the West. Or Joseph Needham's history of technology in China.
