Hate Speech, Social Media

This essay about the phenomenon of Antisemitism on Birdsite last week is worth reading:

nbcnews.com/think/opinion/how-

Of special importance is how both the right and the left engage in antisemitism- a phenomenon I've discussed and been the victim of before, including on the Fediverse.

Religion, Culture

An interesting parts of being with my fiance, who is of a different race/culture than me has been the eye-opening experience not only of her culture, but how many different Jewish groups have gone through cultural erasure and how this can either be by violent force or by what happens when a group is saved and then "incorporated" into another group.

Since Maghrebi Jews consisted of both Maghrebi and Sephardi, they weren't considered "Sephardic" until relatively recently.

Really the core issue is also that the home directory filesystem idea is a bit silly by design.

Per application files (think executables and dotfiles) don't need to really be managed by external applications- they take care of themselves.

Files we do use between applications (documents, photos, etc.) aren't well organized in a simple hierarchy. Good indexing systems (tagging, full text search, etc.) is much better for such files.

One of my favorite apps is called "Keep or Sweep". All it does it show me a random file (maybe one I haven't opened in a while) and ask me if I want to keep it or not.

I love it! I wish there was something similar for the desktop that would go through my old files and that it would ask me if I wanted to move the file to somewhere else, to help me keep my files organized.

Health, Diet, Environment

Found out that it takes 1.1 gallons (~4 liters) of water to grow a single almond.

I try to limit my use of almond flour anyway, but *yeesh* that's a lot of water for a small nut.

Coconut flour keto naan anyone?

For fellow fans of Non Violent Communication, one of the real challenges of NVC for me is understanding that the focus is on compassion and needs, not strategies.

Hey folks,

I see some people are giving me partial replies, as in 'Why don't you give up on one or two of your criteria."

I already have multiple banks and I want to eliminate that and have only one bank. That's what the email is pointing to.

Took some frozen fish fillet from the freezer, added to a small pot with homemade kimchi, salt, pepper, a little olive oil and a squeeze of lemon.

Darn good soup.

But based on how little work this was, it feels like "Hot ham water"

Americans, do you have a "favorite" bank?

I have bank accounts with 3 major chains and I dislike each of them.

I used to belong to a credit union but they locked every couple of weeks due to foreign transactions, so I had to close that.

Features I need:

1. Good service (can be by phone)
2. Easy to use bill pay
3. Doesn't have an issue with foreign transactions (won't lock my account!)
4. Lets me do wire transfers online- especially foreign transactions

Any suggestions?

I'm all about rewarding good performance, but the way the O'Rangers dominate the season points to something deeper. Look at the team. They're a little *too* good

We believe the O'Rangers are juicing.

There is now a Mastodon instance for publishing scientists: FediScience.

Everyone is welcome from PhD student to professor, as well as researchers from outside of academia. You are welcome to stay afterwards, but it is also easy to change to another server.

There will be a lot of science talk on this server, but there is no need to only talk science

Boosts are appreciated to let others know about this new instance.

The HOPE 2020 Schedule is up!

AFAIK it's free to attend, with some events (workshops) limited in live participation paying attendees who bought tickets before the pandemic, but you should be able to watch the talks at the very least.

I know there's a lot of fear from some of my friends about HOPE and it's scary image, but I encourage everyone to watch and participate.

Portland is so fucked right now. The government is "disappearing" people. I don't ever want to hear the right-wing utter the word "freedom" again unless they're against this: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/07/18/opinions/portland-anonymous-security-forces-mark-of-dictatorship-ghitis/index.html

I have been thinking a lot lately about Uncle Floyd.

I think he embodies a lot of both enthralls and repulses me about my upbringing in suburban NJ.
