israel, truth

While I don't agree with the tone of the presenter, the facts she says are true and her outrage is understandable.

Why do celebrities like @emmawatson
@violadavis
and @dualipa
support Palestine?

@emacsen Did you catch the presenter's slip at 0:19 ?

israel, truth

@mpjgregoire

She said it's low risk and high reward. It is low risk to side against Israel, and it is high reward.

Where do you see a slip-up?

israel, truth

@emacsen At 0:19 she meant to say "Palestine" (as in the subtitles), but she actually said "Israel".

No, I'm not suggesting that there's some hidden meaning, just that the video would have benefitted from a better editor.

israel, truth

@mpjgregoire

I agree it's not a perfect video, I also don't love her tone. Also, her posts can veer into areas I disagree with.

Nonetheless, she's absolutely right in her indignation- the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has a lower body count than any of the other conflicts she mentions, yet it gets 50x more attention, and this meme that Israel is apartheid also spreads despite the fact that it's just not true, so this information needs to get out there.

israel, truth

@emacsen I'm not sure that it's as simple as low-risk, high-reward.

Why do so many celebrities sympathise more with the Palestinians than the Israelis? It could just be traditional anti-semitism, in this case attaching itself to the Jewish state.

My own theory has to do with #ArnoldKling 's three languages of politics: some people view politics as a question of oppressor-oppressed. They see Israel as the strong party in the conflict and thus in the wrong.

@mpjgregoire

I really want to think and hope that it's not pure antisemitism. I think many people are simply uniformed, or misinformed by organizations like the BBC and the CBC, which overreport and misreport on Israel.

I can also understand the oppressor-oppressed view, and it's actually common in pro-Israel circles as well, showing maps like this one:

iris.org.il/images/israel-and-

Which shows the number and relative sizes of the various Arab countries vs the size of Israel.

israel, truth

@emacsen Yes, from a different point of view, one could say that Israel is weak in comparison with the Arab or even Muslim world. Evidence for that would be how the UN treats Israel.

Personally, I find the oppressor-oppressed axis is not very useful. A strong party may very well be in the right; a weak party may be chiefly responsible for its problems. Inequality is not inherently unjust. One must consider the circumstances to understand what is fair, reasonable or desirable.

israel, truth

@emacsen I've replied to the Twitter thread with the "Three Languages of Politics" theory. There won't be any intelligent responses, wait and see.

@mpjgregoire

I also think it bears mentioning that despite thinking that Israel is overly attacked on the conflict, I still feel a lot of sadness over the lives that many Palestinians lead.

I don't share the view that many do that all it's due to their own choices/their choice of leaders, etc.

I still want a peaceful multi-state solution.

I also know that no matter what, even if there was peace, people would just find another reason to hate Israel and Jews.

israel, truth

@emacsen One would have to have a heart of stone not to feel compassion for the many poor Palestinians.

Someone replied to the original Twitter post with images of a Palestinian family whose home was being destroyed by Israeli bulldozers. Someone else replied that that's what happens when you build somewhere without a permit. I don't feel the need to investigate the truth behind those photos, but I have no reason to doubt that the sorrow of the mother was genuine.

israel, truth

@emacsen I will add that sometimes one needs to accept that history has not gone as one would have wished, and try to do what is best for the future.

Descendants of the #Loyalists may regret that Britain lost the #AmericanRevolution , but they have made good lives for themselves in Canada. They do not spend their energies planning to drive the republicans from New York State to retake their ancient homesteads.
